Gold Fields invested over US$15m into the Ghana Black Stars - Ghana Rainbow Radio

Wednesday, 22 November 2017

Gold Fields West Africa has revealed that it invested over $15 million in the over six-year sponsorship package for the Black Stars. President for Gold Fields West Africa, Alfred Baku, who made the revelation at a press conference to launch the fourth edition of the PGA Golf championship said, the company's sponsorship brought the team a lot of achievements including their first qualification to the world cup. According to him, it was not necessarily because of mismanagement that the mining giant, step aside their sponsorship for the national team but officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), approached the company and requested that they wanted other corporate bodies sponsor the team. He said the GFA also made a request for an increment in the sponsorship package since others were willing to give them above what Gold Fields provided. He added because the company wanted others to also come on board, they decided to step aside their sponsorship. He was emphatic that the company did not step aside because they had run out of cash. Alfred Baku said the company will continue to sponsor golf activities because the area has not received the necessary support. He was optimistic that, the sponsorship will go a long way to give golfers an opportunity to excel like how the national team excelled when they had all the needed support. The fourth edition of the Gold Fields Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Ghana golf championship at the Damang Golf Course in the Western Region, has been scheduled to take off from November 29-December 3, 2017. The tournament is being sponsored by Gold Fields Ghana Limited with support from Engineers and Planners, ATS, Gen Star and ZEN Petroleum. The PGA founded in 1970 has played a huge role in promoting golf in the country and ensuring they build a successful career for professional golfers in Ghana.   Gold Fields some few years ago, made an official pronouncement it would not renew its $3 million sponsorship package for the senior national team.
