Our VP Mining, Kate Sommerville, based in our Perth office, joins a discussion on the future of mining at the Diggers & Dealers conference

The Gold Industry Group and Deloitte’s annual Diggers & Dealers Breakfast takes place on Tuesday, 7 August, in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Australia. Kate Sommerville, our VP Mining, based in Australia, is one of the panellists who will be discussing the fundamentals that are key to moving mining organisations to the next level. The breakfast panelwill focus on: Digital Mining; Innovation in Mining; Future of Work and the Image of Mining.

We spoke to Kate about her participation:

Q: Why do you believe this is such a crucial time to have these future-focused conversations?
A: Mining has been doing the same things for a long time and has been successful at it, so it’s easy to say ‘why should we change now’. We also fear job losses. There is also so much information and data that is available that it can overload us.

If Gold Fields has the right culture to support innovation and technology and partner with tech-savvy groups then we can realise our vision of leadership in sustainable gold mining. Skilled people will be attracted to work for us, which will ensure that we will be able to be sustainable in the long-term .

Q: Why are you excited about working in the mining industry at this time?
A: Gold needs to perform better as an industry. I’m excited to collaborate with peers in the industry and we will get there much faster if we do. The solutions will make our workplace safer, our mines more sustainable and help us find and exploit gold quicker. There is also the fact that I am fascinated by technology. You should see what I use to train for my triathlons!

Q: Why are you keen to be part of the panel?
The audience at Diggers and Diggers is the emerging, junior and mid-tiers, so it is important to have a company the size of Gold Fields talk to them about the challenges around Digital, Innovation, Future of Work and the Image of Mining.

We need solutions we can implement in the near-term, which will help us in delivering mines across the world, operating them responsibly and profitably and creating Shared Value for all our stakeholders. This is particularly relevant for our communities, which are critical stakeholders at all our operations. The future of work relies on our communities accepting us and benefiting from our presence.

Diggers and Dealers is a male-dominated event. When I signed up for the event I put the word out that my goal was to highlight the need for more women at the event. Our own Kelly Carter, VP Legal and Compliance, was one of three ladies in 2016 who broke the 22 year drought of women speakers at the event.
